Learner Web Regional Profile

Richmond, California

"The Learner Web allows students to do a blended learning model, and to increase learning opportunities where class time is limited. Students get a sense of accomplishment as they go through the lessons.  They can function independently. The Learner Web enables LEAP program staff to have more time to work with students face-to-face in a classroom. It also allows for creativity, if staff members have the time, resources and energy."

The Richmond California Public Library hosts the Richmond Learner Web region, through its Literacy for Every Adult Project (LEAP), whose Executive Director is Sherry Drobner.

In December, 2010, the Richmond, California Learner Web region was developing Learning Plans and focusing on 800 LEAP students who were working on getting their GED. The students had been referred through Richmond Employment and Training because they couldn’t pass the Test on Adult Basic Education (TABE). In addition to what the students were learning in classes, LEAP also provided tutoring in math and reading.

LEAP is making its own lessons using video recordings. These will be incorporated into their Learning Plans. They currently use a basic Learning Plan to help students to pass TABE math and are planning to add in algebra and geometry.  They have been field-testing the TABE Learning Plan with students, have been using Learning Plans from other Learner Web regions, and hope to have learners themselves develop Learning Plans. They will also use the Learner Web for assessment purposes. LEAP volunteers and staff are preparing learning plans and identifying Learning Resources.

LEAP plans to partner with other organizations in the Richmond, California Learner Web region. They believe that the Learner Web is an effective tool for community collaboration because online resources can be locally produced by community groups and together, the Learner Web can be a vital link between people’s needs and community resources.
